Early Samurai

During a "Heian period", the emperor's huge army was dwindling. Powerful clans offered low taxes and more people joined them, making them even more powerful. To protect themselves from the state and from other clans, they started training excellent soldiers, who became the forerunners of samurai. The different families were becoming even more powerful. In 1185, Yoritomo Minamoto finally seized the government and became the first shogun, or military dictator. The shoguns remained in power for the next six centuries.

Bushido

A samurai had to follow the code bushido, which was a system of rules that he must follow. If a samurai messed up, then he had to commit the ritual suicide seppuku, or cut out his stomach and bleed slowly and painfully to death.

The seven virtues of bushido

  • Gi (right decisions)
  • Yu (courage)
  • Jin (benevolence or good-ness)
  • Rei (respect)
  • Makoto or Shin (honesty)
  • Meiyo (honor and glory)
  • Chigi (or something) (loyalty)
Guess why the samurai kept committing suicide? They lacked access to the healing powers of cheese.
